Fees

Fees are based on the nature of the editing project and can range from $3.00 to $15.00 per page, or more if your manuscript requires a significant amount of fact checking or research. Hourly charges can range from $17.00 to $65.00. It depends on the kind of manuscript you have and what you want done. Prices are flexible and based on native-speaker texts at graduate level or above. Editing of non-standard English will generally be treated as substantive editing.

Format

Electronic media are preferred over hardcopy.

Types of Editing

Proofreading
$17 to $24 p/h

Correct indisputable errors only: Check for misspelling, typos, incorrect punctuation and incorrect grammar.

Copyediting
$25 to $34 p/h

Check style and consistency: Proofread, but also watch formatting, such as consistency in titles, subsection titles, type face and type style, and parallel construction in lists and headings. Fact-checking for what should be commonly understood information. Make sure the manuscript conforms to whatever style guide the publisher expects, e.g., AMA, APA, AP or Chicago. Cross-check citations with reference list, figures and tables. Suggest improvements in syntax for clarity and logical flow, but only query the author without making substantive changes to content.

Substantive Editing
$35 to $44 p/h

Clarify, tighten and polish: All of the previous, but also make minor changes or recommendation on what to delete, rearrange, reword or rephrase to minimize confusion, wordiness, triteness and inappropriate or confusing jargon. Query the author about apparent gaps or contradictions in information and issues raised but not addressed by the author. Polish the prose by suggesting clearer phrasing, smoother transitions and the like. May fine-tune copy by multiple authors to achieve a more consistent tone.

Developmental Editing
$45 to $65 p/h

Help develop the manuscript: Work with the author from the idea, raw material or early draft to develop the manuscript, advising on organization of material and format. May include proposing supplemental material such as appendices, indexes, graphics, photos, tables, charts or figures. Likely to suggest revisions, but does not necessarily proofread or copyedit.
