A Birmingham hockey franchise founded in 1992 bore the name Bulls, but was renamed Rhein Fire after the league was dissolved. WLAF was renamed NFL Europe, and other teams were added before it was fully merged in 2007. In 2009, the team was renamed the Birmingham Bulls of the American Hockey League (AHL), but that league, too, disbanded after just one season due to financial difficulties.
In 2019, the Alliance of American Football (AAF) was a short attempt to create a professional football league, and the Birmingham Iron were one of the league's best teams when they closed their doors. The switch from natural grass to artificial grass has cast doubt on the stadium's role as a football stadium. One is a team sport that plays a stick ball, similar to football, but with a ball that is not in the ground, while kickboxing was an inviting sport in 2017. Wheelchair basketball will also be an invitational sport at TWG 2022, as will flag football, which will be an invitational sport for the first time.

XFL first tried to create a new football league in 2001, and the Thunder Bolts from Birmingham were part of that first group of teams.
